Muuto

I have fallen in love with Muuto. The Scandinavian design collective drew its name from the Finnish word for “fresh perspective” (muutos), an apt translation for the team’s consciously modish collection. My favorite item is the Four Flower Vase by Matthi Klennel:

Four Flower Vase

The mouth-blown glass vessel strikes a dynamic color and spatial relationship between the clear outer cylinder and an interior globe of colored glass with circular cut-outs. I love how the two layers speak in contrasting and yet reciprocal duos: transparent and colored glass; straight and curved lines; positive and negative space. The vase is thus truly three-dimensional and begs to be admired from multiple angles.

Eva Solo Bird FeederIt comes in five tempting color options: warm green (as pictured above), opal white, smoked brown, clear and grey blue.

The interior sphere also reminded me of the Eva Solo bird feeder (see image, left). Surprise! The bird feeder is Scandinavian, too — Danish, in fact. Methinks it would make a fine pairing with the Four Flower Vase.

Full details and the entire collection are available at www.muuto.com

Tara Donovan at the ICA

Here are a few shots from my trip to the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston over Thanksgiving. From the road, the museum appeared a bit small against the dramatic Boston Harbor, but once inside the layout and scale of exhibitions felt just right.

On the top floor, I fell in love with Tara Donovan‘s delicate installations which were made of everyday materials like film, scotch tape, drinking straws and styrofoam cups. The repetitive patterns revealed beautifully organic forms that captured and reflected light in subtle ways, shifting as I walked around them. The photo below is of layered polyester film from Untitled (2008).
