Seattle.

It’s been another month and well into the summer season since I last wrote. The days have been full with spectacular music shows like Robag Wruhme, Omar Souleyman, and Matmos; Balenciaga at the De Young Museum, Isabelle de Borchgrave at the Legion of Honor; and a trip up to Seattle to see some architecture, sip delicious coffee and visit with some long-lost Fraggles. Oh yes, and memory-drenched ambient releases from the Caretaker, Ezekiel Honig and Matthew Cooper. Here are a few photos from the trip north:

Holiday Weekend.

Last weekend was full of good music. It kicked off with the Lumerians show at the Catacombs on Friday, followed by Spectrum‘s mind-blowing performance at the Hemlock Tavern on Saturday. After a glorious day hiking on Mount Tam (with wildflowers in full bloom), I caught Spectrum a second time at the New Parish on Sunday. It’s been a blissful weekend.

Laser Cutting at TechShop

Here are some photos from a fun laser cutting class I took today at TechShop in San Francisco:

We learned how to use CorelDraw to send digital files to the laser cutter, both to etch as well as cut through various media. You can see how Elvis in the first photo above is etched into corrugated cardboard at different settings.

I took this class to be able to incorporate laser cutting into my print work at Logos Graphics. This week, I am letterpress printing business cards onto chipboard and will laser cut the client’s logo out of each card. It’s very exciting to learn how the process works, and I’m glad TechShop hosts classes and offers machine rentals to its members.

28th Ikebana Flower Show

Here are some photos from the 28th Ikebana Flower Show, hosted by Ikebana International. Different schools of ikebana — Ikenobo, Ohara, Sogetsu, Wafu, Enshu, Chiko and Aratame — represented varying arrangement styles in the San Francisco County Fair Building.

My favorites included those from Enshu and  the school of which I am a member, Ikenobo. They were the most classical in style, and yet among the most extraordinary pieces in the show:

Felt & Wire Love

On St. Patrick’s Day, the San Francisco Center for the Book hosted a Ladies of Letterpress event featuring the organization’s co-founders, Jessica White and Kseniya Thomas. Jessica and Kseniya met many Bay area printers, spoke about the growing online LofL community and promoted the first ever LofL conference coming up this summer in Asheville, North Carolina.

As a member of LofL, some of my print work was included in a member show that same evening:
